5 Essential Maintenance Tips to Extend Your Machine’s Lifespan

A well-maintained sewing machine is the backbone of any productive tailoring or manufacturing business. Regular maintenance not only prevents costly breakdowns but also ensures your stitches remain clean and consistent. Here are 5 essential tips to keep your machine running smoothly for years.

1. Clean the Bobbin Area Daily

Dust, lint, and thread fragments accumulate quickly in the bobbin case and feed dogs. Use a small brush to clean these areas at the end of every workday. Built-up lint is the number one cause of thread jams and skipped stitches.

2. Oil Moving Parts Regularly

Friction wears down metal parts over time. Apply a drop of high-quality sewing machine oil to the designated oiling points (usually the hook race, needle bar, and presser foot shaft) as recommended by your machine’s manual. Avoid over-oiling, which can stain fabrics.

3. Replace Needles Frequently

A dull or bent needle damages fabric and puts extra strain on the motor. Replace your needle after every 8-10 hours of sewing, or immediately if you hear a popping sound. Always match the needle size to your fabric weight.

4. Check Belt Tension & Motor Brushes

For industrial machines, inspect the drive belt for cracks and ensure proper tension. If your machine slows down despite a clean interior, the motor carbon brushes may need replacement. We stock genuine spare parts for all major brands at Deljatt.

5. Cover When Not in Use

Dust is your machine’s enemy. Always cover your machine with a breathable cloth or hard case when not in use. This simple habit drastically reduces cleaning time and internal wear.
