Industrial vs Domestic Sewing Machines: Which One is Right for You?
One of the most common questions we get at Deljatt is: should I buy an industrial sewing machine or a domestic one? The answer depends on your needs, budget, and the type of work you do. Let’s break down the differences.
Speed and Power
Industrial machines are built for speed and heavy-duty work. They typically run at 4,000-7,000 stitches per minute and can handle thick fabrics like denim, leather, and canvas all day long. The Jack F5 and Two Lion TL-8500 both run at 5,000 SPM.
Domestic machines like the Singer 4423 or Brother FS155 are slower (800-1,100 SPM) but offer more versatility with multiple stitch patterns, buttonholes, and decorative options.
Durability and Lifespan
Industrial machines are built with all-metal frames and heavy-duty components designed for 8+ hours of daily use. A well-maintained industrial machine can last 15-20 years. Domestic machines are designed for lighter, intermittent use and typically last 5-10 years with regular home sewing.
Versatility
Domestic machines win here. They offer zigzag stitches, buttonholes, decorative patterns, and embroidery options. Industrial machines typically do one thing — straight stitch — but they do it exceptionally well.
Cost
- Industrial: ₦175,000 – ₦750,000+ (complete with table and motor)
- Domestic: ₦80,000 – ₦260,000
While industrial machines cost more upfront, their durability and productivity often make them more cost-effective for professional tailors.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose Industrial If:
- You sew professionally or run a tailoring business
- You work with heavy fabrics regularly
- You need speed and consistent stitch quality
- You sew for 4+ hours daily
Choose Domestic If:
- You sew as a hobby or for home use
- You need multiple stitch types and buttonholes
- You work with lightweight to medium fabrics
- You sew occasionally (a few hours per week)
The Best of Both Worlds
Many successful Nigerian fashion designers own both — an industrial machine for production work and a domestic machine for detail work and decorative stitches. This combination gives you speed AND versatility.
